I grew up in one of these churches. While I agree that Christian Nationalism plays a part in what happened on Wednesday, it is tied up with apolcalyptic end times dogma. Growing up, I regularly heard I might someday have to fight and die to defend my faith. But every conceivable event was twisted into a sign of the end times. Their actions, both in supporting this president and in the Capitol insurrection on Wednesday, are the natural consequence of these beliefs.

I applaud writers at GEN for pointing out Christian Nationalism's many horrifying flaws, but lack of explanation about their fervid belief in the end times is a gaping hole in coverage everywhere. Our country has made foreign policy decisions based upon this thinking (see: moving our embassy to Jerusalem.) It is imperative that we understand what this group believes and why so that we can effectively defeat it.
